They occasionally offer a place to sleep for the night to travelers in the form of an old woman or beautiful young woman. Yamauba means mountain old woman. She is has other nicknames such as mountain witch. According The Book of Yokai, depending on the region where you live, that is the way you determine if she is good or evil (Foster, pg.144).
